Water, Water Everywhere

Subject Area

Environmental Science
Age or Grade

7th Grade
Mass DOE Content Standard
Give examples of ways in which organisms interact and have different functions within an ecosystem.

Identify ways in which ecosystems have changed throughout geologic time in response to physical conditions, interactions among organisms, and the actions of humans.
Prerequisite knowledge/skills

Scientific method, brainstorming, water systems in area
Description of New Content

Students will learn about their local water shed and the importance of keeping it clean.
Goals

Students will understand water consumption and affect it has on their local environment.
Students will build two water filters and use the scientific mthod to compare their effectivness.
Materials Needed

Computer to show opening clips.
For filter: Plastic cups, various types of fabric scraps, coffee filters, sand, gravel, and dirty water for filtering

Procedure

Opener
Students are asked how much water they think they use in a day.  Then either as a class or in groups, stundet will list activities the do that require water.  Using the water use worksheet2 students can calculate their water usage.  Students can watch the Water Treatment plant2 clip to understand how water get to their house.

Exploration
Student will watch the  Water Filter2 clip to understand how to design a basic water filter.  Ask students is groups to design two water filters they can compare using the materials provided or brough from home.  Students should ave a hypothesis as to which filer will work better and why before they receive building materials.  Students will build their filters and add dirty water to each filter.  Results will written in a lan report as below.

Evaluation

Student will write a lab report on the filter project.  Sections will include: The final lab report will include:
Question:  Will filter A or filter B work better?
Hypothesis
Procedure: Draw or describe the two types of filters and how they were used.
Data Analysis:  What did the water look like after filtering? Which filter worked better?
Conclusion:  Why did one filter work better?  How does this relate to how we get clean water?

Extensions

There are many other activities on Teachers Domain invovling water cycle and pollution.
Student can research more on water treatment plant in their area and find out about the filters the plants use.
